In-home Maternity Session
We’re half-way through May and finally, all the doubt is over. Summer is here to stay. Is anyone excited? For the record, I just feel so relieved of not having to pack mittens, hats, and jackets to our morning outings anymore. Just slip on the sandals and we’re out the door. I’m so excited for all the things we’re going to do this summer. Such a short (and hot) season and I want to ensure we enjoy every minute of it.
Today on the blog, I’d like to share with you this sweet in-home maternity session that took place back in March. I haven’t done a lot of in-home maternity, so was very excited when Judith reached out. There is something very special, cozy, and love-filled when it comes to documenting maternity at home. It feels as if I’m documenting the excitement-in-the-waiting that a family has/and feels daily right at where they are. Through my lens, I see how mom and dad are cozying up in bed, talking all things baby, feeling and laughing at the kicks, and planning ahead for the arrival of a special little one. It’s definitely the type of session that I wish to do more in the future.
Working with Judith, her husband Craig and their daughter Selena was a dream. We started the session in Judith’s bedroom as it has the most gorgeous window light. This is super important. You don’t need fancy decors for an in-home session, you need LIGHT. Give me all the window light and I’ll make your photos golden. We also utilized the bed as another background for our photos. Judith has this pretty floral bedding on her bed, however it’s a bit too dark and doesn’t match the colour palette that they were wearing that day. Btw, Judith did such an amazing job putting the family outfits together. I LOVE her dress, so beautiful and flowy. Selena’s soft blue floral dress is so pretty and creates just a nice pop of color among all the white. Anyway, I removed the blanket and kept it simple with plain white wall and white sheet. Sometimes, simplicity is the BEST. It puts all the focus on my clients and their love.
Once we started shooting, everything flowed together. Selena loved cozying up with mom and dad, and she gave me the most beautiful smile. Judith and Craig are such easygoing and fun people, so I kept the posing simple and natural, and just focused on capturing the family’s authenticity. We got lots of laughters, lots of jumping on the bed, and intimate moments for mom and dad. We even got some photos with Ty, their dog. It was such a good morning shoot.
I hope Judith’s session gives a glimpse of how intimate and fun an in-home session can be. If you’re thinking of doing one but worried that your home is not good enough, let this be a reminder. You don’t need fancy decors or beddings. All you need is LIGHT. Gorgeous light makes gorgeous photos. And leave the worries of re-arranging the room to me. That’s what I’m here for, to make sure your photos turn out beautifully and truly to who you are.
With love,
