A sweet in-home maternity session

Have you ever considered an in-home maternity session? If not, let this be your sign to do one.

When Stephanie reached out to me for a maternity session in March, I was thrilled. I love documenting this time of waiting. The excitement, preparation, love, yearning, and joy are all too beautiful not to capture.

We discussed potential locations, and to be honest, there weren’t many choices for that time of year. Some options we considered were a studio, a greenhouse, or her home. After weighing the pros and cons, we decided on an in-home session. The house has beautiful light throughout, and I knew we could create stunning images with it. And we did!

We began the session in the new nursery, which was sweetly decorated. Little L, whom I’ve photographed since he was a newborn, is now three years old. He showed me around the room, brought me his favorite toys, and even played peek-a-boo with me. This is something I absolutely love about these sessions—taking a few minutes to get to know or catch up with the children. After all, I either haven’t met them before or haven’t seen them for a while. Spending a few minutes with them helps us both feel more comfortable, which in turn helps the session go smoother and less intense for them.

In all of my portrait sessions, I always start with a few family portraits while everyone is still fresh. Once I’ve got all the good shots, we move on to something fun for the children. For this session, I asked Little L to bring his favorite car or truck to play with mom and dad, which he was delighted to do. We got lots of laughs during this playtime, which I absolutely loved. After an outfit change, we spent a few more moments with mom and dad taking turns snuggling and playing with L. We concluded our session with a few more portraits of Stephanie.

I’m so happy we chose an in-home session. Everyone was relaxed, comfortable, and warm. It was such a beautiful and sweet experience, definitely one of my favorites. I cannot wait to be back in a few weeks to photograph the little babe when he’s here.
